It looks like something is finally happening. After eight long years, there are some big hints out there a publishing date for Game of Thrones book The Winds of Winter is just around the corner. First off, TheWindsofWinter.com’s DNS records have recently been updated.
This suggests that the domain has been bought so that it’s in the right hands for the long-awaited book’s release.
Meanwhile, George RR Martin’s blog has been unusually quiet for around two weeks.
Redditor Orpheous1947 wrote: “The fact that he has not posted for almost two weeks, along with all the other recent evidence, and the fact that he seems to be at home right now, indicates to me that an announcement is upcoming. I predict by this month.”
And now Martin himself has tweeted something very interesting indeed.
- Winds of Winter release date soon? Hint on George RR Martin website
Last Friday, the A Song of Ice and Fire creator posted a picture of a doll of himself enjoying a view.
The scene is among flowers, greenery and sunshine, suggest a summer or maybe ever spring vibe.
Martin’s tweet accompanied a quote from L. Frank Baum’s Rinkitink in Oz.
It reads: “Never question the truth of what you fail to understand, for the world is filled with wonders.”
Fans have been speculating in the comments that the sunny snap is a cryptic tease that Martin is ready to start A Dream of Spring.
This would imply he’s finished The Winds of Winter, adding to the hype around the recent website update and blog silence.
While a publishing date for penultimate A Song of Ice and Fire book could really just be around the corner, let’s not forget Martin’s proposed writing schedule.
The 71-year-old has made it clear that after finishing The Winds of Winter, he will have a break before A Dream of Spring.

No, not a break from writing, but a palate cleanser in-between the latest volumes of his fantasy epics with so many characters and narrative arcs.
Martin intends to pen his fourth Dunk and Egg short story, which will be a much lighter feat for him, before starting A Dream of Spring.
But fans shouldn’t despair as he’ll get on to the final A Song of Ice and Fire book after that before writing a fifth Dunk and Egg tale and then finally part two of Fire And Blood – his 300 year history of Targaryen dynasty.
So just when is The Winds of Winter likely to release?
Well, earlier this year Martin set a personal deadline of summer 2020 when he attended World Con in New Zealand in late July.
Meanwhile, the author has said he hopes to write some episodes of Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon.
But he’s clarified on his blog that finishing The Winds of Winter is his top priority.
Let’s just hope this doesn’t push back A Dream of Spring though.
