Joan Collins’ explosive new Hollywood diaries do not hold back when it comes to what she made of Frank Sinatra. On October 14, 1996, the future Dame attended former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore’s 69th birthday where she found herself sat between the 80-year-old crooner, who died two years later. According to an extract from My Unapologetic Diaries, Joan was told she had one of the best seats between Sinatra and Gregory Peck opposite Sir Roger and Barbara Sinatra.

Joan shared: “Mine is not an easy draw because Frank Sinatra is not and never has been interested in talking about anything other than himself, and now that he is, to be kind, getting on a bit, his mind wanders a lot.

“Luckily, Veronique Peck is on his right and they know each other extremely well so she bails me out many times.

“Barbara Sinatra keeps a watchful eye on him from across the table, occasionally barking: ‘Did you take your pills, Frank?’

“It’s frightfully sad to see this golden icon now a befuddled old man.”

Joan added: “I prefer talking to Greg Peck who, although a little dull, is adorable and regales me with stories about his one-man show and says I should do one.”

Later in the evening, billionaire’s wife Barbara Davis announced that everyone should say how they felt about Roger one at a time.

Despite “an audible sigh of horror” everybody paid tribute to the James Bond star, who died in 2017 aged 89.

However, Joan couldn’t stand Sinatra’s behaviour during the speeches, saying he acted like a little boy.

Joan wrote: “Sinatra keeps saying in a loud voice like a five-year-old: ‘What’s going on — why is everybody talking — is it time to leave yet?’

“Veronique Peck tries to soothe the savage beast’s brow.”

In total there were around 26 people seated at the beautiful table, with stunning flower arrangements.

As for what Joan herself said when it came to her turn, she was disappointed to find what she thought a witty comment didn’t even get a titter except from Roger himself.

Joan had said: “Darling Roger, I’ve known you through thick and through thin, and through Tony Curtis.”

She highlighted how the James Bond star and Curtis disliked each other.

Following the birthday cake and singing, everyone left at the turn of 11pm, which Joan put down to: “That’s Hollywood”.

This extract was serialised in the Daily Mail and My Unapologetic Diaries by Joan Collins is published on October 14, 2021.
