Winds of Winter: George RR Martin teases BAD move for Tyrion Lannister

Winds of Winter is the sixth and latest Game of Thrones book on its way to store shelves. George RR Martin has been announcing a number of updates over the course of the past few weeks, explaining how far he has come in creating the new and improved world of Westeros.

Lately, the author has been extremely cryptic in his updates, but he may have given something huge away this time.

He recently wrote a huge expose on how he is progressing in the fictional world of Westeros.

During the word-dump he explained how his characters are extremely nuanced.

But in doing so, he referenced a number of notable traits about his biggest characters.

Martin first wrote of his struggles in writing.

He said: “Dwelling where I am now, deep in the heart of Westeros, I find myself surrounded by my characters, the children of my mind and heart and soul.

“They are real to me, as I write them, and I struggle to make them real to my readers as well.”

Despite this, he then went on to tease: “All of them are flawed, from the best to the worst.

“They do heroic things, they do selfish things. Some are strong and some are weak, some smart and some stupid.”

“The smartest may do stupid things,” Martin added. “The bravest may have moments when their courage fails.

“Great harms may be done from the noblest motives, great good from motives vile and venal.

“Life is like that, and art should reflect that, if it is to remain true. Ours is a world of contradiction and unintended consequences.”

It is no question that Tyrion Lannister is without a doubt the smartest character in Martin’s mythos.

While he has certainly done some stupid and horrific things in the past, could Martin be teasing another bad move from the young dwarf?

Tyrion has been through quite a lot of bad stuff over the course of the series thus far.

His most recent journey sees him travelling towards Daenerys Targaryen with a supposed long-lost member of the Targaryen family – Young Griff.

But, considering Martin has now teased his “smartest” character is going to go through a rough patch, could Tyrion be caught up in an unexpected turn of events?

Last month saw Martin explaining how he had returned to his “cabin in the woods” to continue writing Winds of Winter.

After briefly speaking about hosting CoNZealand, he added: “But all that is behind me now, and I am back on the mountain again… which means I am back in Westeros again, once more moving ahead with Winds of Winter.

“It is curious how my life has evolved. I mean, once upon a time, I actually wrote my books and stories in the house where I lived, in a home office.

“But some decades ago, wanting more solitude, I bought the house across the street and made THAT my writer’s retreat.”

He went on to conclude: “No longer would I write all day in my red flannel bathrobe; now I would have to dress and put on shoes and walk all the way across the street to write. But that worked for a while.”

Winds of Winter is expected to be released in 2021.
