The Winds of Winter has been almost released for a really long time. Fans have been getting thoroughly impatient at writer George RR Martin for taking longer than a decade to release the penultimate book in the series. However, a new update from the author suggests there may finally be a date in place for the book’s release.
George RR Martin’s Not A Blog has become a helpful tool in working out how far along the author is with his latest writings.
He has told fans he is still writing the book, as he has updated them on his steady progress and been incredibly helpful in sharing some exciting things fans can look forward to.
Most recently, he has updated fans on the book’s progress, with one stunning detail which eagle-eyed fans can be very keen on.
Martin explained how his forced quarantine and social distancing has been helpful in some ways to help him to write, and he even went so far as to explain how his progress has been.
He said: “If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write.
“I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress.
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week.”
With that being said, however, Martin did explain how this update will not mean a quick release for fans.
He continued: “But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week.
“It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”

While this may seem frustrating or saddening, fans need not fear, as a potential release date could be in the pipeline.
Martin continued: “I was heartbroken when CoNZealand was forced to go virtual due to the pandemic and I had to cancel my plans (exciting plans) for a long trip down to Wellington with Parris and my minions… but there is definitely a silver lining in that cloud.
“The last thing I need right now is a long interruption that might cost me all the momentum I have built up.
“I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done.”

Evidently, Martin is hoping by the next WorldCon, which will likely be July 2021, The Winds of Winter will finally be finished, meaning he can show it off at the convention.
While this is some time away, at least now fans have something to hope towards, knowing the book is unlikely to be in their stockings at Christmas.
Martin was scheduled to appear at WorldCon this year, however, the convention when virtual, and though he promised to have a finished manuscript of The Winds of Winter by this time, clearly his hopes are with WorldCon 2021 for the finished edition.
Martin added: “I do wish they would go faster, of course.
“Way way back in 1999, when I was deep in the writing of A STORM OF SWORDS, I was averaging about 150 pages of manuscript a month.
“I fear I shall never recapture that pace again. Looking back, I am not sure how I did it then…
“Mostly, it’s just me in Westeros, with occasional side trips to other places in the pages of a great book.
“Now you will have to excuse me. Arya is calling. I think she means to kill someone.”
Clearly, this hefty tome will be worth waiting for, as it will feature a huge number of characters, trips to kingdoms even outside of Westeros and a whole lot of killing for Arya Stark.
