Coleen Rooney cunningly planted three fake stories about her private life in a bid to catch the person who was selling information about her family to a British newspaper.
In a plot resembling something from the Cold War, mum of four Coleen cleverly laid a trip to find out which of her trusted inner circle was doing the dirty deed.
Taking a note out of Kim Kardashian's book – who tried something similar around the birth of her eldest daughter North to see which confidants were spilling her private secrets – Coleen closed her Instagram Stories to every single one of her followers, except Rebekah Vardy's account.
Coleen, like many celebrities, has two Instagrams – one for all her fans, and a second, secret, account that is private to all but her closest family and friends.
It was the secret account that Coleen used to bait the story-seller with three pieces of fake information to see if she would get a nibble.
The first one, which was published by the newspaper on August 15, was about her and husband Wayne Rooney heading to Mexico to look into gender selection treatment.
The so-called source claimed Coleen would love to have a daughter and so had flown out to Mexico where the controversial treatment is legal.
Next came a story on September 28 about Coleen eyeing up a return to TV by holding talks with the BBC about signing up for Strictly Come Dancing next year, which spun into more reports claiming Wayne had begged his wife not to do it.
And the third story concerned the Rooneys' brand new £20million mansion, which Coleen pretended had flooded in the recent wet weather.
The source claimed Coleen and Wayne were "devastated" by the destruction, which came just before their planned move back to the UK from Washington, DC.
"Over the past five months I have posted a series of false stories to see if they made their way into the Sun newspaper. And you know what, they did!" Coleen wrote in her statement.
"The story about gender selection in Mexico, the story about returning to TV and then the later story about the basement flooding in my new house.
"It’s been tough keeping it to myself and not making any comment at all, especially when the stories have been leaked, however I had to.
"Now I know for certain which account / individual it’s come from. I have saved and screens hotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them.
"It’s……… Rebekah Vardy’s account."
However, pregnant Becky has hit back, denying she was the source of the fake stories and claiming other people had access to her Instagram.
"As I have just said to you on the phone, I wish you had called me if you thought this," she wrote back to Coleen on Twitter .
