Friends star James Michael Tyler is in a tough battle with stage four prostate cancer but despite the odds his manager says he’s “responding well to chemotherapy”.

The 59 year old actor, who played the hilarious Central Perk owner Gunther for all 10 seasons of the hit sitcom, was diagnosed over two years ago.

But his cancer has now spread to his bones and spine, along with other parts of his body.

In a new interview, James’s manager Toni Benson assured that he really wants to live, and has been responding well to his treatment.

The brave actor has been undergoing chemotherapy to try and slow the spread of the disease.

“He wants to live,” Toni told PEOPLE. “He's going to fight this.

“Lately he's been having amazing days,” the star’s manager continued.

“He's done his second round of chemo and so far he is doing really well.

“He's hopeful it will be effective,” Toni added.

The Gunther star, who had a memorable turn on the comedy show Friends, was part of a storyline where his character was secretly in love with Rachel Green all the way through the show.

Unfortunately, due to his current condition, James was unable to attend the Friends reunion show that aired last month and appeared via video link instead.

Due to the aggressiveness of his cancer, the actor is paralysed in the lower body and can no longer walk.

But despite having lived with the awful disease for nearly three years, James is determined to stay optimistic, according to his manager.

“Though he's wheelchair bound, he's very mobile,” Toni shared. “He has the most amazing attitude…

“I don't think he's going anywhere for a long time,” she added, also going on to tell the publication that her client continues to try and raise awareness of prostate cancer.

The manager insisted James’s main focus now is his wife, and “changing people’s lives”.
