Gogglebox star Marina Wingrove has taken to social media to post a touching tribute to her best friend Mary Cook, following her death aged 92. Taking to Twitter, the Channel 4 show’s official page posted the tribute in view of their 327,900 followers.
My dearest friend Mary, treasured memories will last forever
Shared last night, the tweet read: “A tribute from Marina to Mary.
“My dearest friend Mary, treasured memories will last forever.
“Our laughs and giggles and our ups and downs will forever be in my heart.
“Deepest sympathies to Mary’s family. Love Marina,” it ended.
As well as the tribute, the post featured a funny clip of the duo attempting to take a selfie, which ended in Marina accidentally ringing someone.
The tribute comes as Marina was previously “too upset” to address Mary’s death.
Following the devastating news, the former branded the situation “very sad”.
She added: “I’m a bit upset at the moment. I don’t really want to talk about it.”
The duo had starred on the Channel 4 show together since 2016.
Mary died in hospital surrounded by her family on August 23.
A statement from Studio Lambert confirming her death read: “We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
“Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice.”
Marina and Mary struck up a friendship after meeting at their retirement village in Bristol over a decade ago and quickly became fast friends.
The funny duo were reportedly discovered by a Gogglebox researcher during a trip to Asda.
Fans missed the pair when they were absent from the latest series of the show which aired earlier this year.
The programme said the duo were unable to film due to coronavirus restrictions at the time.
Bosses had deemed it “too risky” for the pair to be involved with the show.
Gogglebox fans and cast members flocked to Twitter to pay tribute to the late star.
Cast members Dave and Shirley wrote: “So sad to hear the passing of Mary.
“She was a lovely funny lady, our thoughts are with Marina and Mary’s family #Gogglebox #MaryCook.”
Addressing Marina’s tribute, Mandy Amory commented on the post: “Bless Marina and bless Mary as that was lovely. And I hope Marina is able to continue with #Gogglebox when she’s ready – although it won’t be the same without Mary.”
