Helen Skelton: Countryfile host’s ‘surreal’ birth minus husband ‘Fire brigade turned up’

Helen Skelton struggles as she tries to home school her son

Countryfile presenter Helen Skelton, 37, has two young sons Ernie, five, and Louis, three, with her husband Richie Myler, 30. The BBC presenter spoke candidly about her family life when the couple resided in France.

It comes after her other half and professional rugby player, Richie, signed a two-year deal with Catalan Dragons in 2016.

The couple made the move from the UK across the Channel, but Helen confessed it had been an “isolating” experience.

The Countryfile presenter opened up about the moment she went into labour and the fire brigade arrived instead of an ambulance.

The small-screen star was on her knees “barking in pain”, as she gave birth to her second child.

Helen explained that she gave birth to Louis in the family kitchen minus her other half.

“Luckily a friend was with me when I went into labour,” she recalled.

“There I was on my hands and knees, with Ernie hitting me on the head with a plastic sword because he thought I was playing monsters.

“That is what little boys think you’re doing when you’re on your knees barking in pain. It was very surreal.”

“The fire brigade arrived because they operate the ambulance service, but they had never delivered a baby before. Somehow we managed,” Helen added to You magazine.

Helen had previously revealed that her husband was away in England at the time of her giving birth.

The former Blue Peter star welcomed her youngest on the kitchen floor.

“I was in France and my husband was in England, and no one made it to me in time,” she told the Daily Mirror.

“It was terrifying. But I didn’t have a choice, I just had to get on with it.”

The family returned to the UK three years ago, after her husband received an offer to play for the Leeds Rhinos.

“In rugby circles you don’t turn down Leeds,” Helen explained.

“So we packed up and moved back to the UK, where yet again I was the new girl in town.”

Helen married professional rugby player Richie, in 2013, and has since revealed that more children are off the cards.

She explained: “I always thought I’d want more children until my son started walking and now he runs around like a lunatic.

“I’ve got enough capacity at the minute, two boys, two dogs and a busy schedule.”

Countryfile airs tonight on BBC One at 5.40pm.
