Outlander star Caitriona Balfe has told how her pregnancy put a “spanner in the works” when it came to directing the hit show. The Irish actor, 42, who plays Claire Fraser in the series, said that it’s been “difficult” to get around to directing the programme due to “being pregnant” and starring “in almost every scene”.

The star candidly spoke about her hopes of getting behind the camera to work on the hit show.

Caitriona admitted that she’s been wanting to turn her hand to directing on the show for a while, but said that it had been tricky to make it happen.

She said: “In terms of Outlander I’ve been knocking on that door wanting to direct for quite some time.

“It’s been difficult I think.”

The star went on to elaborate on why it has so far proven to be complicated to organise.

Caitriona explained: “I was hoping I’d maybe get to do some extra scenes last season but with the pandemic and being pregnant and being in almost every scene again put a spanner in the works in terms of that.”

She went on to add that the chances of her getting to direct the show were slim, admitting that she was disappointed that she wouldn’t get to do more work behind the camera this season.

“It’s unlikely this season I think. These things really need to be planned and I don’t think it’s happening. I’m sad about it. I would love to,” she told SheKnows website:

Earlier this year Caitriona left her fans gobsmacked after revealing that her and her husband Tony McGill had welcomed a son.

The star had been quiet on social media ahead of making the announcement, where she said she felt “grateful” after giving birth.

Alongside a snap of her newborn with his hand wrapped around her finger, she said: “We are so grateful for this little soul… That he chose us as his parents.”

She continued: “I’m in awe of him already and can’t help stare and wonder at all the possibilities of who he will become.

“Where he will go and what he’ll do on the big adventure of his life.”

Caitriona added: “Right now he seems so small and fragile and I constantly think how grateful I am that I live in a place, in a time where he is born into peace and safety and yet at the same time I see so many in the world right now that aren’t afforded that same privilege and opportunity…

“Who are born into famine or war and how unjust it is that the same safety isn’t there for all children.”

Ending her adorable announcement, she penned: “Here in the west we have so much, we are so lucky and so if you’d like to join me in supporting any of the wonderful charities that need help trying to give those that are forgotten dignity and hope.

“We can give the gift of peace and safety and opportunity to a few more children… @wchildcancer @chooselove @unicef @refu.”

Caitriona and her husband Anthony ‘Tony’ McGill, a band manager, married in August 2019.

McGill, an Irish music producer and Scottish band manager, popped the question after more than two years of dating.

Speaking to PEOPLE at the 2018 Golden Globes, where she was nominated for best performance by an actress for Outlander, Balfe revealed she was engaged.
