TV presenter Kate Garraway has shared a rare photo of her husband Derek alongside one of his carers, as he continues to suffer a serious case of long-Covid.
Posting the snap to her Instagram page, Kate, 55, paid tribute to Derek's carer Jake, who had looked after him when he was first released from hospital.
The snap sees Derek laying in bed while Jake held his hand and looked towards him grinning.
Sharing to photo to Instagram, Kate penned the caption: "Many of you will remember Jake who cared for Derek when he first came out of hospital in April 21 – from the documentary #caringforderek , so you will know what a wonderful healthcare professional he is.
"But have just found out he’s also an amazing musician – under the name @sencymiller.x – He’s just released a song called #okukuseku (check it out in his bio) – which no surprise is full of love & inspiration to keep going & never give up. The world of carers never fails to surprise me with their depths of talent , thoughtfulness and motivation #happyfriday all."
Kate's followers were quick to comment on her post, with one writing: "That's a wonderful photo what would we do without these wonderful people much love send to you all."
Another added: "carers are definitely angels who aren’t given the credit they deserve for the amazing job they do for all of us at some point in life we will all need someone to care for us be good if the government dealt with the reality of this , but carers have dreams too x."
While a third wrote: "How inspirational through all your struggles. It’s such a shame the world has come to what it has x."
Derek caught Covid-19 in early 2020 and spent 13 months in hospital, during which time he was placed on a ventilator in intensive care, with the virus causing long-lasting damage to his organs.
Since leaving hospital in April 2021, Derek has required round the clock care.
Last year Derek was dramatically rushed to hospital after suffering from sepsis, and he then again returned to hospital for a serious procedure as he continues to battle with his health.
At the time a source told The Mirror: "This is another hammer blow for poor Derek.
"He is giving the fight against Covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage.
"Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate. Of course, Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine.
"Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front."
