Michael Palin wife: Monty Python star opens up on marriage ‘We’ve still got some secrets’

While many may know Sir Michael Palin as a member of Monty Python. He is also known for his many travel documentaries with his most recent series Travels of a Lifetime looking back on his adventures from over the years. But what is known of Michael’s love life?

The Monty Python star has previously spoken of how, after five decades with wife Helen Gibbins, they are still learning about each other within their relationship.

Talking to the Mirror last year Michael he spoke of how they still have “some secrets” between them.

He explained: “We’re like a couple of old pals. We have been together for so long and known so much about each other, and yet still don’t know everything.

“We’ve still got some secrets. She’s terrifically feet on the ground… much more practical.

“When lids on pots won’t come off, I’ll curse it and shout. So she’s very good at steadying me.”

Michael and wife Helen first met when they were teenagers with Michel just 15-years-old.

They crossed paths while visiting the same beach in Southwold, Suffolk while on a family holiday.

Talking of why they got on so well he told the Times in 2018 they shared a “similar sense of humour.”

Michael explained: “We got together largely because we had a similar sense of humour.

“Of course, there was love and affection and all that, but it wasn’t the most earth-shatteringly passionate affair — it was simply that we enjoyed things together.”

They went on to get married in 1966 and have since been married for more than five decades.

He has previously spoken of the key to a lasting relationship with Helen during an interview with the Telegraph in 2015.

He said: “What is the really important thing in a relationship, what is the main thing?

“Sex, or going to the theatre, or having lots of friends, or whatever? None of that matters.

“There’s something underneath that works, that you’re happy to be with somebody for an awful lot of the time.

He added: “The more time you spend together, the more things you have to share, the less likely it is that you want to throw all that away.

“That, again, is probably my wife’s very practical sense.

“We all have dreams, but she brings me back to reality.”
