Phillip Schofield has discussed the moment he came out as gay on television earlier this year.

The silver-haired star came out in a lengthy Instagram story post in February before going on This Morning to be interviewed by his co-host Holly Willoughby.

In his new book Life’s What You Make It, the father-of-two penned: “We were closer than we’d ever been.

“Holly knew my truth and was helping me to hold everything together.”

The star, who has admitted to running off the This Morning set to be sick while keeping his sexuality a secret, also penned that reports of a feud between himself and Holly had affected his mental health.

He wrote in the tell-all book: “It felt like death by a thousand cuts, each little wound not serious on its own but, collectively, I felt like I was bleeding out.

“It went on, week after week, relentlessly feeding on itself and based on not one single truth that I could identify.”

During the lead-up to Phil revealing his sexuality, reports of a feud between him and co-star Holly, 39, surfaced.

The reports described how their relationship was strained, and that Phil was jealous of Holly’s success, however he has since dismissed the claims while adding that they couldn’t be further from the truth.

Talking about his announcement that he was gay on This Morning, Phillip said he’d talking through the situation at great length with his wife Steph.

He explained: “We talked the whole thing through, there were no secrets, there have never been any secrets.

“When I knew, she knew. And it wasn’t like a sudden ping, it was like ‘This is tripping me up’ – initially I didn’t understand.”

The silver-haired TV host said it was one of the most difficult things he had ever done, but thanks Holly for supporting him and always being by his side.

At the time Holly appeared choked up at the sentiment and embraced her on-screen husband and told him she would be by his side "forever".

During an appearance on The One Show in October, Phillip praised his co-star for being so supportive as he opened up on his sexuality.

“We’d had a big lead up to that moment and when I knew what I had to do Holly was one of the first people I told,” he explained.

“She is such a wise person, she has got such a calm, sensitive aura to her. We had to figure out how we were going to do something like that, and that’s the worst thing about it If you’re going to do something in public, it had to be public.”
