After 15 long years, Reese Witherspoon is finally returning to the role of Elle Woods for a third Legally Blonde movie — and she’s obvi been having a blast working on it!
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Big Little Lies season two premiere on Wednesday, the 43-year-old actress gushed over the cultural significance of the “beloved” character who stole audiences’ hearts in 2001.
Witherspoon said that, like Elle’s first story, which saw her going from California sorority princess to Harvard’s finest law school graduate, the third installation will aim to give the character an equally satisfying journey.
“She’s a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero’s journey like she does in the first movie, and I’m having a great time working on it.”
Basically, she’s saying the third film will be just like the first film… except for funner!
The Oscar-winner didn’t share any specific deets about what Elle would be up to in LB3, but she did confirm there’s “a script” — noting they “haven’t shot anything” just yet.
After Elle went through Harvard Law school in 2001’s Legally Blonde, she gave Washington D.C. a makeover while fighting for animal rights in 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. So really, the only logical premise for the third film — as many fans are hoping for — would be for Elle to… run for president!
What, like it’s hard?
While #Woods2020 promotes itself, the plot for LB3 could really still be anything at this point. The only thing we know is that it’s happening, and that Reese is VERY on board for it.
The mother-of-two confirmed there would be a third film last June, telling Ellen DeGeneres at the time:
“Well, we’re meeting about it. We’re definitely talking about it. I mean, it’s sort of about women being underestimated and I think it’s sort of a good idea. Things have changed, but not that much has changed! I loved playing that character and she’s so amazing. I don’t know, if you guys want it then I guess I’ll do it!”
Another project Reese is excited for is her upcoming series, The Morning Show, in which she stars alongside Jennifer Aniston.
She told ET of the Apple TV series:
“It’s such a great show. I can’t say anything about what it’s about, but I think it’s going to be surprising for people. It’s very surprising, and Jen is wonderful. And again, it’s this great female partnership. I have to say, it’s a great theme in my life and the past few years. I’m just really enjoying the partnership with other women I really respect and admire.”
We can’t wait for more of that female empowerment when Legally Blonde 3 hits theaters!
