Sir Tom Jones has opened up about the passing of his wife Melinda Rose Woodward saying he felt guilty following her death in 2016. The Welsh singer said he wishes he had intervened and made his late wife seek earlier treatment for what was later diagnosed as terminal lung cancer.
Following her “short but fierce” fight with cancer, Melinda – known as Lady Linda – died in April 2016.
Speaking to the Mirror Sir Tom revealed that one of lady Linda’s favourite songs plagued him following her death.
Jones said the lyrics specifically led him to question whether he had done enough for her within in their marriage.
One particular section reads: “What good am I, if I’m like all the rest? If I just turn away, when I see how you’re dressed? If I shut myself off, so I can’t hear you cry?”

Tom talks about how the lyrics made him question his part in her death, he said: “Jesus Christ, was I partly to blame? Should I have woken up before?
“You start to think: ‘What if I had forced her to go to the doctors?’ Because she didn’t go.
“You think: ‘S***, maybe I should have said she had to.’ So that song is very touching.
“That song is the one I was scared of. She loved it.”
Jones and Linda had an unorthodox way of keeping in contact with each other in an interview in 2015, Sir Tom explains that they preferred to talk over the phone than in person.
Sir Tom said: “When you’re face to face with somebody, you realise that time has gone on but when you’re on the phone we’re both young again.
“You’re not looking at one another, I’m looking at an old picture I carry around with me and leave by the bed.”
It was reported that near the end of Linda’s life she was agoraphobic, meaning she would stay at home while Tom would spend weeks or months away working.
