Keanu Reeves is famous for roles in movies like The Matrix, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and John Wick has always been adored for his good looks. With his dark hair, engaging eyes, and an air of mystery, there are few who would deny that Reeves is one of the sexiest men in Hollywood. Add in his notoriously charming personality and it’s no surprise that fans of all ages still go gaga over him.
Given how captivating Reeves’ features are, some fans have wondered what his ethnic heritage is. There has been a lot of speculation over the years, not all of it tasteful, but it’s not something Reeves brings up himself super often since he can be pretty private. So what is Reeve’s ethnic background anyway?
There are some hidden surprises in Keanu Reeves’ early biography
The first of many surprises aboutReeves’ backstory is that he wasn’t born in North America. In fact, he was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1964.
Thereafter, he was raised in Toronto, Canada. Reeves’ father is of English descent and his mom of half-Chinese and half-Hawaiian heritage. This means that Reeve’s heritage includes a rich cultural blend of his parents’ ethnic backgrounds, the places he has lived, and the place he calls home now, which is LA, California.
One surprising aspect of his background is just how Canadian Reeves is in some ways — namely, his love for hockey! He spent a huge portion of his childhood playing hockey and was even a coach at one point. Reeves even caught the eye of some professional teams but ultimately turned down those opportunities, choosing instead to keep pursuing his true dream of becoming a famous Hollywood performer.
Keanu Reeves has been a Hollywood hottie for literally decades
Though he appeared in a few movies and shows here and there before that, Reeves’ dream came true when he landed his first truly major role as Ted in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989. That movie spawned a three-part series that will actually be getting its third installment soon. Fans were ecstatic when they learned Reeves will be reprising the role of Ted.
Throughout the 90s, he was seen mostly as an action star due to films like Speed (1994) and The Matrix (1999). But part of the reason Reeves has managed to have such a long career is that he can do all sorts of roles.
He isn’t afraid to appear in comedies like Always Be My Maybe (2019) or in romantic films like Sweet November (2001) or The Lake House (2006). It’s obvious that Reeves’ compelling looks aren’t the only reason he keeps landing roles — his impressive range is to blame!
His ethnic heritage isn’t the only compelling part of Reeves’ background
Recently, Mental Floss put together a list of interesting facts about Reeves and a lot of them are genuine surprises.
For instance, Alice Cooper used to regularly come over to Reeves’ house when he was a kid. Since Reeves’s mom was a well-known costume designer, she sometimes had famous clients and Cooper just so happened to be one of them.
Another surprising fact is that Reeves is a published poet. He published a book of his poetry entitled Ode To Happiness back in 2011.
It was a collaboration with a visual artist named Alexandra Grant, who created illustrations to accompany Reeves’ words. The two later went on to work on another book, Shadows, in 2016.
Spoiler alert: the two turned out to be a couple, which fans loved because they adored seeing a hot Hollywood actor with a smart woman of a similar age as his significant other.
It seems that Reeves is an enigmatic figure as nuanced and culturally diverse as the ethnic heritage he claims…which is why he’s sure to still have fans for decades to come!
