The Monkees’ Davy Jones sang a song during an episode of The Brady Bunch. He reprised the song for The Brady Bunch Movie. The writer of the song really didn’t like the new version of the track Jones recorded for The Brady Bunch Movie.
The Monkees’ Davy Jones performed this song in ‘The Brady Bunch’
After The Monkees broke up, the members of the band went on to different projects. For example, Mike Nesmith directed music videos for Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and Micky Dolenz appeared in a production of Elton John’s musical Aida. On the other hand, Jones had a solo career.
One of the most famous moments from Jones’ solo career was his appearance on The Brady Bunch. During that episode, he performed a song called “Girl.” That episode had an interesting impact on popular culture.
The former Monkee performed a new version of the song for a movie
Jones performed a new version of “Girl” for The Brady Bunch Movie. This rendition was a grunge song — grunge being a style of hard rock that was popular at the time. According to Goldmine, “Girl” songwriter Charles Fox wasn’t a fan.
“When they did it again, Steve Tyrell, the producer of the track, called me one day and said, ‘Hey, Charlie, I just did your song ‘Girl’ for The Brady Bunch Movie,’” Fox recalled. “And I said, ‘Great Steve!’ And he said, ‘Yeah, you’re gonna hate it.” (laughs) And he was right, I didn’t care for the grunge rock version; I like the original.”
The way the world reacted to Davy Jones’ ‘Girl’ and ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’
Regardless, Fox is proud of “Girl”‘s longevity. “I’ve had the good fortune of traveling to many countries around the world to hear people sing my songs in different languages,” he said. “It’s interesting how songs connect with people. To hear that people still love ‘Girl’ touches me very much, and it’s something that I really appreciate very much.”
Fox also explained why he likes Jones’ rendition so much. “I was pleased with Davy’s recording of ‘Girl,’” he said. “It was a fun, upbeat, energetic performance. It grows on you over time, too, because it’s been heard so many times.”
The original version of “Girl” did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. “Rainy Jane” was Jones’ only solo single to chart in the United States. Jones did not release the grunge version of the song as a single and it did not chart.
On the other hand, The Brady Bunch Movie was a success. Box Office Mojo reports the film earned over $14 million during its opening weekend. The film made $46 million overall. While Fox wasn’t a fan of the grunge rendition of “Girl,” lots of moviegoers saw Jones sing it.
