Is Beyoncé's Daughter, Blue Ivy, the Youngest Artist to Earn a Grammy Nomination?

Beyoncé is known for breaking records and making history, but her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, is following right in her footsteps. In fact, her nomination for the 2021 Grammy Awards make her one of the youngest artists to ever earn recognition from the award ceremony.

Beyoncé is the most nominated woman in Grammy history

She’s known for her groundbreaking album, Lemonade, her historic Coachella performance, and her activism. Beyoncé is one of the most awarded artists in Grammy history, earning recognition for her project with Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, as well as her solo music.

In 2020, Beyoncé earned a number of Grammy nominations for her album, The Lion King: The Gift, which was then transformed into a visual album exclusive to Disney+, titled Black is King. This film by Beyoncé featured members of the Carter family, including her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, who was featured on “Brown Skin Girl.”

“It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown,” Beyoncé said on Good Morning America, prior to “Brown Skin Girl’s” release. “We wanted every character to be shot in a regal light… It was important that we are all in this together and we’re all celebrating each other.”

Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl,” as well as songs like “Black Parade” earned Grammy Award nominations. When it was first announced, the nomination for “Brown Skin Girl,” from The Lion King: The Gift, only listed Beyoncé as the main nominee in the Best Music Video category.

The nomination has since been updated to reflect Blue Ivy and WizKid as collaborators, according to Rolling Stone, a huge feat for Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s 8-year-old daughter. This is Blue Ivy’s first-ever Grammy nomination.

The 2021 Grammy Awards wouldn’t be the first time “Brown Skin Girl” earned recognition at award shows. Blue took home Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration at the NAACP Awards, and the BET Her Award, both of which she shares with her collaborators on the song.

Is Blue Ivy the youngest artist ever to get a nomination? She’s one of the youngest, definitely. Blue Ivy earned the nomination at 8 years old.

According to VMagazine, “Leah Peasall of the Peasall Sisters, who was also eight when she was nominated for Album of the Year in 2001 for the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou?” If Blue Ivy wins, because she turns 9-years-old prior to the award ceremony, she will not be the youngest winner in history.

That doesn’t make the award any less special for Beyoncé fans and Blue Ivy stans. Music by Beyoncé and her daughter are available for streaming on platforms like Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music.
