Channel 4’s Scarlette Douglas is an expert in finding people the properties of their dreams on A Place in the Sun. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Scarlette addressed the impact coronavirus has had on the UK property market and the changes she’s pleased to see have happened over the course of the last year.

Scarlette began: “I think in terms of Covid in the UK I can definitely speak on the fact that a lot of people [are moving to the countryside].

“You’ll see that from house prices going up and properties getting snapped up the minute they go on the market when we look at the countryside.

“People are trying to find more space, they realise that actually they can’t be working this crazy 24/7 lifestyle.”

“[They don’t want to be] constantly on that rat race and on that hamster wheel, and not having family time, switch-off time and downtime.”

“So a lot of people realise, ‘I need a good amount of outside space, I need to be in the countryside,’ or they need to live somewhere where the pace of life is a lot slower and calmer.

“At least somewhere where they can escape to if they need to for a long weekend.

“So I think in the UK we can say that the housing market has gone crazy for rural areas.”

“I think that’s great and it’s brilliant,” the A Place in the Sun presenter noted.

“There are amazing houses in the countryside I think everyone should try and get as much fresh air and space.”

Meanwhile, Scarlette explained Brexit has caused problems for those looking to purchase property abroad.

She noted couples looking to live abroad for long periods of time are subject to new rules.

“In terms of abroad, especially with Brexit now there’s a new rule because we’re no longer in the Schengen area,” Scarlette said.

“We cannot stay in Europe for longer than 90 days in any 180 day period.

“We can only really do three months within a six month period kind of consecutively.”

This affects those who want to buy a house abroad so they can spend half the year in the Spanish sun.

“Think about how often you want to be travelling, how long you want to be staying there for?” Scarlette advised.

“Does that work for you before you decide whether or not you’re going to buy somewhere?”
