Beverley Callard rules out Corrie return and ‘won’t go back’ to ITV soap

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard says she will never return to the soap because 'it's just not me any more'.

The actress – who played Liz McDonald – left in 2020 after 36 years on the cobbles.

"I won't go back," she said. "There's no doubt about that. It's just not me any more. Liz has run her course.

"Now, I can please myself if a script comes in and I want to do it, I can.

"It's quite liberating."

Beverley, 65, was forced to take two months off break the ITV soap after collapsing on set with severe clinical depression in 2016.

A pharmaceutical company had halted production of a drug she had been taking to combat the condition.

Though she returned she admitted she had grown to hate character Liz’s tight-fitting outfits.

But Beverley told Women's Weekly she may be willing to give Strictly Come Dancing sequins a go.

She had to pull out a previous series of the BBC celebrity dance contest when a hip op went wrong leaving her unable to walk for five months. But she said she was now fit to tango.

"Maybe I could do it now,’" she said.

"I don't know whether they'd ask me again."

At the weekend Bev’s fellow Corrie legend Vicky Entwistle admitted she no longer watches the show due to a lack of on-screen 'talent'.

The actress, who played gobby Janice Battersby for 14 years, told fans on Twitter the ITV soap had become a turn-off.

But she said she may start tuning in again following the decision to bring back the character of eco-warrior Geoffrey David 'Spider' Nugent – played by actor Martin Hancock – this summer.

Vicky, 53, who left Corrie in 2011, tweeted: "This may just be the best news I have heard in the last 10 years!!

"Bring the Talent back!!!

"Might start watching now!!"

Another fan chimed in at the time: "Brilliant. Classic Corrie from 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s was superb.

"Much missed. Needs to get back to being character driven with stories people care about that reflect normal working class lives rather than all this sensationalist stuff."
