Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan speaks out on filming X-rated scenes for racy show

With filming due to start on season three of Netflix’s period drama Bridgerton in just a few weeks time, all eyes will be firmly fixed on Penelope and Colin next season as they take centre stage for the next exciting instalment of the series.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope, recently opened up about what fans could expect in the next series, which included confirming that Penelope and Colin’s romance will be leading to some very risqué scenes, which she is more than prepared for.

So far, series two saw Penelope struggle with her love for Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton), while she continued to hide her identity as Lady Whistledown from best friend Eloise.

However the show’s upcoming storyline will see things come to a head, with Penelope even finding herself involved in a few of the show’s famous steamy love scenes.

When asked whether she was prepared for the X-rated scenes, Derry Girls actress Nicola joked: “I’m gonna have to be. I’ve known for two weeks into filming season two, so I had a lot of time to adjust to it.”

Speaking to People, the star added: “But then, last night when they were like, “the news is coming out. You can talk about it,” I was like, “I don’t want to. I’m too scared.””

Nicola also went on to add that although she had been preparing for the upcoming scenes, it may be a little while yet before Penelope herself is ready for them.

"Penelope I think has a little more time to wait before she gets into that," Coughlan said. "I can safely say that she's still very much the wallflower. She is in business lady mode.”

Fans of the first series of Bridgerton were left captivated by the steamy and sultry plot lines unravelling on the show, but many were left disheartened when the second season’s scenes were toned down and a little less explicit.

For the third season, show runner Jess Brownell will be taking the helm, replacing Chris Van Dusen in the new season – and fans may be pleased to note, she hopes to return to form and bring a little more sexiness to the show.

“I want to balance that out with quite a bit of sexiness and romance,” she toldVariety .

“I think that’s so important to the show. We’ll get the chance to go deeper with them and push them to more serious sides and see what that looks like, so you’ll be seeing new new levels.”

The third book in Julia Quinn’s collection of romance novels on which the series Bridgerton is based, focuses on the life of Benedict Bridgerton – but fans of the book will have to wait a little longer for his story to unfold on screen as the Netflix show has jumped ahead to book 4, to give more attention to Penelope and Colin’s love story, that so many viewers are already invested in.
