After its successful arrival on Netflix this past summer, Cobra Kai is gearing up to drop its highly-anticipated third season on the streamer.
Fans will be able to ring in the new year with fresh episodes that kick up the nostalgia factor with blasts from The Karate Kid’s past. An unlikely alliance, an old foe, and glimpses of Mr. Miyagi await viewers in this next installment.
‘Cobra Kai’ Season 3 trailer touches on old and new conflicts
Picking up where it left off in season 2, Cobra Kai 3 continues with Kreese’s takeover of Johnny’s dojo and the division it creates among the kids.
Miguel wakes up and begins his arduous journey to mend his body and spirit, and Johnny shows up — in his own way — to redeem himself. This makes for a tag team among rivals when he and Danny decide to call a truce.
But Danny is reflective and clearly feels guilty for his role in what happened between Miguel and Robby, and soon finds his way back to Okinawa. In the season 3 trailer, two characters from The Karate Kid Part II appear: Chozen and Kumiko.
A refresher on Kumiko and Chozen
When the 1986 Karate Kid sequel hit, it took Daniel on a trip with his beloved sensei Mr. Miyagi. It was there that he crossed paths with Chozen, the nephew of Miyagi’s rival, Sato.
Chozen had beef with Daniel throughout the entire movie which culminated in a “battle to the death” and Kumiko being taken hostage. Daniel bested Chozen but refused to kill him, instead leaving him humiliated on the ground with a battered nose.
Kumiko (played by Tamlyn Tomita) was also Daniel’s love interest in the movie and her reemergence in Cobra Kai has some fans wondering if they’ll recapture that spark. Since he’s married, it should make for some interesting interactions.
And then there’s Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) whom Sato disowned for not helping Daniel rescue that child during the typhoon. Judging by the new Cobra Kai trailer, he is still holding a grudge against Danny and confronts him in at least one fight.
Ralph Macchio promised trip to Japan in ‘Cobra Kai’
Macchio already confirmed his character would be traveling to Okinawa in part 3. During an appearance at 2019’s Comic-Con event in San Diego, he told Entertainment Weekly that season 3 would explore the origins of the two styles of martial arts exhibited in Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid.
“Some of the stories will dive into the origins of both Miyagi-do karate and Cobra Kai,” said Macchio. “Like what [are] the beginnings of those two forms of martial arts and then we will learn stuff about both that we never knew — including LaRusso getting to go back to Okinawa which will be a little piece of season 3,” he shared.
Macchio added that his bond with Miyagi will also be explored, as well as some of the techniques and lessons he taught him during his youth. Perhaps Chozen and Kumiko will have more than a short cameo this upcoming season.
Cobra Kai Season 3 arrives on Netflix on Jan. 8, 2021.
