Sally (played by Sally Dynevor) is currently at the centre of a big storyline on Coronation Street as her husband, Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) is hiding a secret from her. What the ITV soap icon doesn’t realise is her spouse has been told he needs to undergo a triple heart bypass operation or risks a fatal heart attack. However, when she hears some news from Sophie (Brooke Vincent) in upcoming scenes on the weeknight serial drama, the legendary character could make an exit as she takes time out from her marriage.
The drama begins in next week’s episodes as Tim is trying to pluck up the courage to tell his wife about his health problems.
Although she has been wanting him to open up to her and show her some affection, she has some news of her own to share with him.
At the moment, Sophie is currently travelling the world with Kate Connor (Faye Brooks) and has been keeping her family on the cobbles updated.
However, she will soon tell her mother she has sustained a broken wrist after falling during a moped accident in Greece.
With her husband having been extremely cold towards her lately and thinking she is not wanted, Sally could begin to contemplate making an exit from Weatherfield to care for her daughter.
Later in the week, Sally also tries to continue with her efforts to run for the councillor position as she gears up to make her come back into the world of politics.
She has some stiff competition, however, as Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) has been a hurdle in her way to victory.
The stalwart has been trying to keep her lips sealed over her campaign plans in hopes she would outdo her opponent.
Though, when she casts her eyes over Maria’s pamphlet, she discovers the mother of one has found out about the plans for County’s football’s training ground.
Sally knows the only person her rival would have heard about this from would have been her husband Tim and this could be the last straw.
Feeling as if her husband is constantly fighting against her, she could take decisive action to try and save their marriage.
Knowing Sophie needs some help with her recovery, Sally could book herself a flight out to Greece and pack up her belongings.
Unable to tell Tim to his face about her exit plan, she could leave him a note, explaining she feels they need a break.
She would also explain she has pulled out of the election campaign as she can’t compete with Maria as the mother of one will always be on her heels.
Will the stalwart’s husband realise he needs to confide in his wife or will he let her leave to go and be with Sophie?
Sophie hasn’t been seen on the cobbles since 2019 when she left her life on Coronation Street behind her to go travelling the world.
The young woman ended her relationship with Paula Martin (Stirling Gallacher) to pursue her dreams and live life to the fullest.
She left to go travelling after Kate but it seems they have been reunited since following updates from their friends and family.
This was written into the scripts as the actress who plays Sophie, Brook, went on maternity leave and there has been no official comment on when she is going to come back.
As a return is not imminent, this would be the perfect time for Sally to make an exit as she has a reason to leave Weatherfield.
The actress who plays Sally, is going to be taking part in the upcoming season of Dancing on Ice so making an exit would also give her time to rehearse her routines.
Once her participation is over, she could be written back into the show to try and rebuild her marriage to Tim after some time away.
Speaking with Express.co.uk and other publications, executive producer Iain MacLeod addressed how something huggers going to impact their relationship.
Iain said: “There’s a massive story for the Metcalfes, which kicks off at the start of January. It stems from a new year’s resolution which seems quite innocuous at the time and very quickly turns into something fairly life-altering for one of that household.
“Then it turns into a story that I don’t think I’ve ever seen done on a soap in anything other than a glancing way.”
The soap boss continued: “We’re dragging an incredibly prevalent issue out into the daylight and pointing the camera at it.
“Some people might find the subject matter a bit awkward but it’s incredibly potent in that family.
“What starts off small ends up being this colossal threat to what Tim and Sally think they know about each other, themselves and the nature of their relationship and what that might look like for the rest of their lives together.
“It’s massive,” he explained so could the exit of an iconic character after decades of being on-screen be the heartbreak Iain has been teasing?
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
