EastEnders fans were left worried for Bernie Taylor on Monday's episode after the pregnant character continued to take diet pills.

Bernie, played by Clair Norris, recently discovered that she is pregnant after agreeing to be a surrogate for Rainie and Stuart Highway (Tanya Franks and Ricky Champ) in exchange for money.

The character has been determined to lose weight, as she thinks it will avoid pregnancy complications, and has been taking dodgy diet pills.

During Monday's episode, Bernie sparked concern in Albert Square after Vi Highway and Rainie spotted her at the cafe where they commented on how unwell she looked.

Vi said: "Don't go dying on us, well look at her, you look a fright!" before Rainie handed her an envelope of cash for her next instalment.

As soon as Bernie received the money, she quickly rang Tiffany Butcher, saying: "Tiff, I need more pills."

The two characters then met up with a concerned Tiffany saying: "I gave you loads a few days ago and you've already finished? Bernie, I can't get you anymore, that's too much."

Bernie was left angry as she ranted: "Right, you're a doctor now, are you?" to which Tiffany explained: "No, you're pregnant. They've done their job, I don't know why you still need them."

The character replied: "I've told you already Tiff, I need them to stay pregnant, that is why I'm doing this, for the baby."

After Tiffany refused to get anymore, Bernie threatened her saying that she would tell her brother Keegan Baker and that she didn't want to make things "harder".

Later during the episode, Bernie's family explained that they were "worried" about her, as she previously had a heartbreaking miscarriage on the soap, telling her they wanted to support her whatever happens.

Bernie seemed sheepish about taking the diet pills, which her family don't know about, and insisted: "It ain't gonna happen again," to which Keegan replied: "Bernie, you don't know that."

She continued: "I've been doing my best to keep my weight down, I've been going to the gym every day."

Their mother Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) then said she was "proud" of her two children, adding: "There you go, isn't it better when there's no secrets?"

To which a sheepish Bernie and Tiffany, who is married to Keegan, looked at each other.

Soap watchers were left concerned for pregnant Bernie amid the diet pill storyline and took to Twitter to share their worry for the character.

One person said: "Bernie stop taking the diet pills! #EastEnders."

A different fan put: "#EastEnders how many pills is Bernie taking a day, to be running out so fast," followed by worried emojis.

Another follower commented: "If Bernie is pregnant why is she STILL taking those diet pills……and taking them without the supervision of a doctor? #EastEnders."

While a different account added: "Why on earth is Bernie taking slimming pills whilst pregnant! #EastEnders."

It comes after actress Clair teased potential drama for her character Bernie's surrogacy storyline on the BBC One soap.

Talking about the storyline in an interview, Clair, 23, admitted that there is a "lot going on at once" for her character and that it is "all a drama".

The soap star told Mirror : "That's obviously a big factor of having a miscarriage and getting attached to the baby.

"It is always gonna be a worry for the Taylors and Rainie and Stuart, as well as Bernie. I think Bernie's mind is so focused on carrying the baby and not having a miscarriage and handing the baby over, because she knows as soon as the baby is handed over she gets that final instalment.

"That's all the money for her family, so she is kind of thinking along those lines but there is that worry of a young girl carrying a baby for nine months, having lost a baby, there is that side of it. Is she gonna give it over or is she gonna go the opposite way? Will she even want to deal with the baby and will she say, 'there you go', there's that side as well."

Clair teased that there is a "lot going on" with Bernie and that a lot of storylines have been "interlinked with the surrogacy".
