EastEnders star Charlie Brooks has addressed the potential return of Janine Butcher to Albert Square.
On Friday’s edition of Loose Women, Charlie, 40, made a virtual appearance where she discussed the prospect of Janine making a welcome comeback on the BBC soap.
Nadia Sawalha opened up the questioning by getting right to the point, asking: ‘Are the rumours true? Are you coming back?’
‘You know, I always want to know what Janine’s been up to,’ Charlie confessed.
However, the actor added that she ‘can’t confirm anything at the moment’.
‘She’s an amazing character. I think it’s always interesting to sort of think about where she is and what she’s doing, cause she’s so much fun to play,’ she said.
‘I can only say what I always say, which is never say never.’
Nadia expressed her opinion that it would be ‘madness’ for Charlie not to return, describing Janine as ‘one of the greatest soap characters’.
‘I’m a huge fan of yours. Was from day one,’ she added.
Charlie made her first appearance as Janine on EastEnders in 1999, when the actor was 17 years old.
Last month, it was reported that Janine was going to be coming back later this year, with a source telling The Sun: ‘Bosses have a huge story planned for Charlie’s return.’
‘They are keeping tight-lipped about whether Janine will come back as a reformed character after all the chaos she has caused in the past,’ they said.
‘But she certainly has a lot of history in Albert Square so whether she will be welcomed back with open arms or not remains to be seen.
‘One thing the viewers can be sure about is that it is bound to be explosive. Wherever Janine goes, drama is never far behind.’
Fans went into a frenzy over the news, with one writing: ‘Honestly this is huge for Eastenders bloody hell, how have they managed to pull off Janine returning.’
‘JANINE IS COMING BACK,’ someone else wrote. ‘NAH IM SO SO HAPPY THIS IS THE BEST NEWS.’
While EastEnders bosses declined to comment when Metro.co.uk reached out at the time, it’s believed that the return will take place later in the summer.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
