Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have been cracking cases as Morse and Thursday for eight seasons of the Inspector Morse origin story on ITV. With rumours of Endeavour coming to an end soon, the cast and creators have recently opened up about the show’s surprising longevity.

Roger Allam has confirmed he originally only wanted to do two seasons of the hit ITV drama, Endeavour.

The period crime series takes a look at the early career of Inspector Endeavour Morse, portrayed by John Thaw in the classic series.

With the third and final episode of season eight airing this Sunday, season eight has once again teamed Allam with co-star Shaun Evans as the iconic sleuth and his mentor, DI Fred Thursday.

However, in a recent interview with the Guardian, Allam confessed he never intended for his role in the series to last for the better part of a decade.

“I felt a huge sinking feeling in my stomach,” he recalled when he was initially offered a three-year contract.

He added: “I refused, and in the end committed to two years.”

The series began back in 2013 and has since been watched by millions of viewers in the UK alone.

Now one of ITV’s most popular series, Allam could very well reprise his role as Fred Thursday for more years to come.

Outside of Endeavour, the British television and film actor is nearly impossible to typecast.

He took a recurring role in The Thick of It, appearing as Peter Mannion in the political satire for ten episodes, but his screen appearances are usually limited to guest parts and one-offs.

Thankfully, he stressed to the Guardian his fondness for the character of Thursday, indicating he’s now more than happy to keep coming back for more.

He confirmed: “I would be very surprised if there weren’t a few more to wrap things up.”

“So that those who are interested in such things can go from the end of Endeavour to the beginning of Morse, while knowing, for example, why Thursday is never once mentioned by the older Morse.”

ITV has yet to greenlight a ninth season of Endeavour thus far, preferring to wait until after the reception of the latest three episodes rolls in.

Still, Shaun Evans has also expressed his hopes for the series to explain Thursday’s conspicuous absence from the original Inspector Morse in future episodes.

Plus, Allam himself weighed in with a few theories of his own.

When the Guardian suggested Morse may have even killed or ended the career of his trusted mentor, he teased ‘Yes’.

“Because Fred Thursday ends up doing something dreadful. That would be fun.

“I hope I die a spectacular death – but I very much doubt ITV would allow that.”

While Morse and Thursday’s partnership probably won’t come to an end this Sunday, their friendship could be at stake if Endeavour is brought back for more instalments.

Endeavour season 8 concludes Sunday, September 26 on ITV.
