Kate Garraway was on hand to be interviewed by Piers Morgan for his final-ever appearance as the face of the Life Stories series and the pair spoke about the journalist’s life and career. One of the most poignant moments of the interview was when the Good Morning Britain presenter spoke candidly about how she has been coping since Derek returned home earlier this year after spending 13 months in hospital where his body suffered immeasurable damage due to the impact of contracting coronavirus in March 2020. The ITV broadcaster broke down in tears as she admitted things are not the same and sometimes, his “presence reminds her of the absence”.

Trying to fight crying, Kate’s voice started to break as she recalled her husband being in hospital and she said: “We were hit with the horror that the doctors were no longer keeping him in the coma but he was stuck in it.”

On his arrival back home, the presenter added: “There have been lots of moments of joy, moments with the children where he knows what they are saying.

“But there is no way of knowing what the future is going to hold,” she confessed to Piers, speaking about how her relationship with her husband is now.

Kate said: “The strange thing is I want him there and want him back but some days his presence reminds me of the absence.

“I feel lonely and want to talk to Derek because he is there but he can’t be there in the same way.”

“I love him more than ever, by the way,” Kate told Piers and the studio audience, which included her father who also shared his take on her strength.

He commended his daughter’s bravery and voiced how admired he is she has continued to do so much despite all the heartache.

In this moment, the presenter broke down in tears as she told her father she had put him and her mother through so much.

The broadcaster was seen brushing away her tears as she tried to regain composure before carrying on with the rest of the interview.

As the chat started, Piers admitted he had spoken to Derek on the phone the night before as he and Kate were preparing.

Piers said: “We had a moment last night when I rang you about this interview. Without warning, you said to me, ‘Why don’t you talk to Derek?’

“And Derek replied when you said it was me, very loud, clear, ‘Hello.’ And I said a few things to him and at the end, he said, ‘Thank you’. I was stunned.”

Kate replied: “The carers that were with me at the time burst into tears. I mean, I don’t want to suggest you’re a healer Piers but it was a remarkable moment.

“It’s moments like that that make you realise that he is in there. And we’ve had others – he will turn to me and say, ‘I love you.'”

Following her interview with former co-star Piers on Sunday night, Kate will take on hosting duties for the Life Stories series.

Although the outspoken journalist has presented the programme for 12 years, the interview with his colleague is his last.

After 20 series, he is handing over the reins to his trusted friend, who has already spoken out about her new role.

The mother of two said in an interview with ITV’s Lorraine: “It will be lovely and I’ve got a big list of people I want to talk to.”

Amongst some of the big names she would like to speak to, Dawn French and Sir Tom Jones are at the top but it won’t be until the New Year Kate will make her first appearance as host.

This will only be for three episodes before the ITV programme is brought to its conclusion as having Piers at the helm of the show attracted the big celebrities over the years.

Teasing her appearance during Friday’s edition of Good Morning Britain, Kate said: “He went all over the place. He delved into my personal life.

“He delved into my past, my exes, career stuff – I mean there are some images of me that I cannot even remember looking like.

“I mean, I cannot believe it is all Piers – he has a massive, massive research team. There is lots in there, I hope you find it interesting.

“But I stop being defensive at that part and I start smiling. I mean, you do these interviews and they are very long … so I genuinely do not know what they have picked and put in.”
