Lily James shouldn't have to run into hiding over Dominic West 'affair' scandal

LILY James is a beautiful, talented and successful young woman – and rightly one of the rising stars of her generation.

Bear with me, this isn’t a desperate plea to take her out for a drink.

Yesterday saw the actress pull out of a planned appearance on Graham Norton’s chat show sofa to promote her new Netflix movie Rebecca.

She will be replaced by fellow cast member Kristin Scott Thomas.

A day earlier she cancelled plans to appear on America’s flagship Today programme, too.

Both moves came in the wake of pictures showing Lily and married actor Dominic West canoodling on a trip to Italy together.

The pair have been filming up- coming TV miniseries The Pursuit Of Love.

But here’s what makes me mad – she shouldn’t have to run off into hiding. She’s done nothing wrong.

While her co-star merrily shrugged off the incident with the smuggest of wry smiles in a carefully choreographed doorstep show of unity with his wife Catherine, Lily appears to have been cast as the villain in a drama which she didn’t script.

Whether she and Dom enjoyed a cheeky holiday fling or a fully fledged romance, she’s a single woman of 31 rightly enjoying her time at the top of her game and all the trappings that come with it.

Pictures of her earlier this summer partying in a London park with pals Dominic Cooper, Billie Piper and Gemma Chan showed a confident woman enjoying life to the full – something that she is perfectly entitled to do.

The snaps of her Italian break depict exactly the same – along with a married man who at 51 is old enough to shoulder the consequences of his own behaviour.

So I hope Lily is quickly back on screens promoting her work and out enjoying herself with pals as soon as possible – and without a care in the world for what anybody else thinks.

And if anyone has earned themselves a stint in the doghouse, it’s clearly Dom.

It’s time he took it like a man.
