Millions across the nation are expected to tune in to watch and are bracing themselves for a massive shock as the show has had countless twists and turns.

Vicky McClure, 37, who plays DI Fleming, said: "Nobody is safe. There’s very little we can say."

Martin Compston, 36, who plays DI Arnott, added: "It would be interesting if one of us goes in this series.

"You don’t want to be killed off or written out as a bad guy."

Creator Jed Mercurio is known for having a string of unexpected deaths on the show over the previous series, as dedicated viewers know.

Some fan favourites have even been killed off after just a few scenes.

Jed has never said he would not kill one of the central three characters; Ted Hastings, played by Adrian Dunbar, 62, Kate Fleming, played by Vicky McClure, 38 and Steve Arnott played by Martin Compston, 37.

Martin said: "Jed would never kill one of us off for the sake of doing it.

"It would be to further the story.

"In our heads, the three of us now come as a package.

"It would be hard knowing one of them wasn’t going to be there."

Viewers are expecting to see Steve and Kate continue to risk their lives to expose corrupt police and organised crime on Sunday night.

In the gripping trailer for the final episode, the colleagues were shouting orders at each other in what may well be a total bloodbath.

Sunday night's finale is predicted to be the TV event of the year.

One in four adults are expected to tune in to the hour long episode, with at least 14 million viewers on the night, making it one of the most-watched shows in BBC history.
