Love Island's Sherif Lanre claims he was victim of 'unconscious racism'

Love Island’s Sherif Lanre has claimed he was a victim of ‘unconscious racism’ after being axed from the villa.

The 20-year-old, who recently revealed that he was removed from the villa after kicking fellow islander Molly-Mae Hague in the groin, said: ‘I can’t rule out that racism was a factor here. I think there may have been some unconscious racism.’

He added: ‘By that I mean, the producers might not have been aware of what they were doing, but they may have had an inherent bias in their minds that caused them to act against me.’

The chef recalled being pulled aside for calling Amber ‘lighty’ which he admitted was a ‘poor choice of words’.

Sherif also explained to The Sun  he was reprimanded for using the word ‘rape,’ after claiming that one of the other contestants spoke about hitting on girls, even when they weren’t interested.

Despite him explaining that he didn’t mind being the only black man in the villa, he added that: ‘The way in which I was kicked out has left a bad taste in my mouth.’

Some viewers appear to agree, having taken to social media to air their thoughts.

‘The reason why Sherif was kicked out of the villa is Qwhite interesting,’ one wrote.

‘I’m in the club right now. I’m yacked. Just seen the news about my g sherif. ITV are racist bro. Double standards. ITV are racist,’ another added.

A Love Island spokesperson told in a statement: ‘We would strongly refute any accusation of racism. All of the Islanders are treated fairly and in accordance with our duty of care.’

The former islander recently revealed that he was removed from the villa after kicking fellow contestant Molly-Mae in the groin.

Speaking to The Sun, Sherif revealed he later joked about the incident to Tommy Fury, telling him: ‘That’s a c**t punt.’

Sherif said: ‘I did kick Molly-Mae in the groin area but it was an accident and she 100 per cent was not injured afterwards.

‘She did appear to be in pain at first but then she stood up and seemed fine and we started laughing about it.

‘I turned to Tommy and said, “That was a c**t punt.” I realise now that was wrong and I would like to apologise.’

Sherif was kicked out of the villa earlier this week, with him saying in a statement at the time: ‘In a case of poor judgement, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa.

‘I regret that I didn’t conduct myself in the right way and, as a 20 year old guy, it’s something I know I will take on board and learn from.

‘I really enjoyed my time in the villa and look forward to catching up with everyone on the outside.’

Love Island continues on ITV2 Sunday at 9pm.
