Strictly Come Dancing 2020: Caroline Quentin breaks down in tears after first dance

Caroline and Johannes took to the dance floor for the first time this evening to perform the American Smooth to 9 to 5 (Morning Train) by Sheena Easton. They were the second Strictly Come Dancing couple to perform this evening and they wowed both judges and the viewers at home with their routine. Clearly her performance was a little overwhelming for Caroline as she broke down in tears following the dance.

As the pair walked over to received critique from the judges, Caroline was seen trying to fight back tears but it all got a bit much.

She was seen wiping away tears while Johannes comforted her but it was soon revealed she had nothing to be worried about.

Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse were all thrilled with the routine with the latter branding Caroline a “Dancing Queen”.

Shirley said Caroline was “going to bring so much joy” to viewers watching at home.

She added: “I can wait a lifetime to see performances like this where you can feel what the other performer is doing.”

The couple were awarded a total of 27 out 30 points for their American Smooth.

When she joined Claudia Winkleman to hear he scores, Caroline explained: “I haven’t had the chance to have a word with Johannes.

“I think that was one of the best times we’ve done it,” and the professional agreed.

Turning back to the host, Caroline continued: “It’s a lot of relief because although it looks so easy when people do it.

“You don’t know how hard it is. Every single bit of you has to be working all of the time.”

Viewers rushed to Twitter following Caroline’s performance to express their joy.

“I love Caroline Quentin already #Strictly,” one viewer posted.

Another aded: ”OMG I’m crying buckets of happiness for Caroline Quentin; that’s one of the most uplifting, graceful, lovely things I’ve seen for a long time #strictly.”

A third tweeted: “For ladies of our age, I am with Caroline! Crying because how can just steps be so hard?? Well done lovely lady! #Strictly.”

Someone else remarked: “Caroline, just brilliant. You made me cry #Strictly.”

Ahead of tonight’s first live show, bookmakers Ladbrokes revealed Jacqui Smith is the favourite to be eliminated first.

The former Home Secretary is evens to be sent packing after just two weeks.

Just behind her is Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh who has odds of 3/1 to be booted off first.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Jacqui’s time on the Strictly dancefloor looks set to come to an end in the next couple of days with punters clearly convinced she’ll be the first to go.”

At the other end of the scale, EastEnders actress Maisie Smith is the favourite to lift the Glitterball Trophy thes year.

Her odds of winning with professional partner Gorka Marquez are priced at 15/8.
