The first three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale season four returned to Hulu just three nights ago, and fans are already wondering whether or not Nick (played by Max Minghella) has betrayed the woman he loves.
The hotly anticipated return of The Handmaid’s Tale has already created quite the buzz after the first three episodes were released on streaming service Hulu.
Nick and the show’s heroine June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) have a long and complicated history.
After being kidnapped and forced into slavery at Gilead, June was able to find love with Nick despite her horrific circumstances.
Things became increasingly complicated as June’s husband (OT Fagbenle), who is currently in Canada, has been desperately looking for his wife and their child Hannah (Jordana Blake).
June and Nick would go on to have a child of their own, Holly, and June was able to get her to safety thanks to fellow Handmaiden Doctor Emily Malek (Alexis Bledel).
The latest episode The Crossing, directed by Elisabeth Moss, sees Nick arrange a visit between June and Hannah to force June to spill the beans over the location of the other Handmaidens.
Viewers were concerned about whether or not Nick has betrayed the woman he loves and is trying to get her to reveal all.
Nick has always been a complicated character primarily due to his position as a spy, forcing him to conduct himself very differently from his fellow Commanders.
Speaking to Steve Varley on his YouTube channel, Max Minghella offered some insight into Nick’s behaviour this season.
When asked whether Nick had any idea about the meet, he quickly responded: “I definitely don’t think so.
“I don’t think Nick would ever be capable of being personally responsible for something that malevolent.
“Especially not something that would have that kind of impact on June,” he added.
Minghella also discussed his status as a major fan favourite and his lack of presence in season three, stating: “I thought he was pretty present in season three.
“But I also felt like the story very naturally wanted a different kind of focus at that point in the narrative,” he continued.
Teasing fans with the news of an upcoming season, Minghella added: “We’re telling a big story here that’s got to run for a minute.
“We’re doing a fifth season of the show, I don’t think that’s giving anything away. So we’ve got somewhere to go.”
Fans should be delighted that another season of the hit series will allow the show to expand on fearless leader June and her relationship with Nick.
Despite everything, Nick is continuing to do everything he can to not only keep himself safe but to protect June.
With Minghella adding: “He’s always trying to utilize his position to June’s benefit.”
The rest of season four should be very interesting between the couple and there is hope future seasons reunite them properly as a family with their daughter.
The Handmaid’s Tale season four is currently airing in the US on Hulu.
