The Simpsons moment is really dark as viewers discover story behind shot

The Simpsons fans have been left unnerved after it was revealed that a moment from the Toys R Us scene is actually really dark.

In the 2004 episode, titled ‘Marge vs Singles, Seniors, Childless Couples and Teens, and Gays,’ a group of childless adults decide to destroy everything child-friendly in Springfield.

That included vandalising the Toys R Us sign, by turning the ‘R’ on the sign round the right way, with children being left distraught.

However, Milhouse Van Houten (voiced by Pamela Hayden) looks particularly devastated, with one viewer tweeting that his expression ‘haunted’ them for years.

Showrunner Al Jean confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the shot from the episode was based on a famous scene from 1943 film, Divide and Conquer, a propaganda film that dealt with the Nazi conquest of Western Europe in 1940, after Reddit users noticed the link.

This particular scene shows the departure of the defeated French army from the Marseille harbour, southern France, while France is taken over by the Nazis.

As for Bart and Lisa? They would both be in their early 40s, with Bart turning 10 in season three, while Lisa is seen turning eight.
