John ‘Preacher’ Middleton (played by Colin Lawrence) spent a lot of time looking after newcomer Christopher (Chase Petriw) in the divisive third season of Virgin River. This year’s instalment of the popular romantic drama on Netflix provoked some strong reactions to this unlikely pairing, and some fans have pointed out some glaring issues with their relationship.
The third season of Virgin River has received considerable criticism since the smalltown romance returned in July this year.
Now, fans have more reason to complain as one of the latest instalment’s most prominent storylines has come under scrutiny.
At the end of season two, single mother Paige Lassiter (Lexa Doig) fled town after killing her abusive ex-husband, Wes (Steve Bacic).
This left Preacher in charge of her son Christopher, who begged to stay with him after his mother skipped town.
Although the ex-marine clearly cares for the young boy, fans found he made some highly reckless decisions which could have put Christopher in danger.
Perhaps the most egregious example came in episode six of the new season, ‘Jack and Jill’.
Despite promising his mother he would take care of his son, Preacher manages to leave Christopher unattended at a large public festival.
He panics, and quickly enlists the help of Jack (Martin Henderson) and Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) to help him look.
Luckily, Christopher is eventually found, but this easily avoidable crisis threw doubt over Preacher’s parenting skills.
While he doesn’t have children of his own, and hasn’t been looking after Christopher for long, he had been incredibly careful up to this point.
His mistake led some viewers to question whether Preacher is actually as devoted to Christopher and his mother as he claims.
Their dynamic has already become a major point of contention for fans on discussion forums once Virgin River’s third season was released.

On Reddit, several viewers levelled several complaints towards the direction of Preacher’s storyline now Paige isn’t in the picture.
One frustrated user posted: “Sorry, but is anyone else getting fed up with the whole Preacher/Christopher thing?
“I know Christopher is going through a lot, but could they make the kid slightly more tolerable?”
Aside from criticisms towards young star Chase Petriw’s acting chops, the viewers raised a number of fair points about the premise behind their growing father-son bond.
Another fan said: “The entire concept that that woman would leave her son with virtual strangers is completely far-fetched so I’m just taking it in stride at this point.”
“Agree; it makes no sense,” replied a third. “If she wanted to get away she would take him with her.”
Hopefully Paige can return in season four and alleviate some of these complaints, otherwise Virgin River could find itself with dwindling viewing figures once the next season rolls around.
Virgin River seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
