What is wrong with Bernice Blackstock in Emmerdale?

Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) has been suffering with hot flushes and other symptoms of late, leading her to believe she may have a brain tumour.

In tonight’s episode of Emmerdale, Bernice’s daughter Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) worries her mother even more by suggesting she may have dementia – which Bernice’s ex-husband Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) died of in 2017.

But what exactly is wrong with Bernice?

Here’s all you need to know.

Viewers have seen Bernice struggle with her day-to day life as of late as the symptoms become all too much for her.

After worrying that she may be suffering with a serious illness, she makes an appointment with the GP, who gives her the diagnosis.

Suddenly, the hot flushes and mood swings she’s been experiencing the past few weeks make a lot of sense.

When Liam (Jonny McPherson), in his professional capacity as her GP, has the audacity to suggest that he thinks the menopause is the most likely explanation for Bernice’s symptoms she’s furious and slams out of the surgery.

To be fair to Bernice, it’s not a conversation you really want to have with your ex.

Her daughter and her friend Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) offer their support in helping her to digest the news, but it does little to comfort Bernice.

But does she really have the menopause – or is there something more sinister at play?

What are the symptoms of menopause?

The symptoms of menopause are as follows:

  • Changes to your mood, like low mood, anxiety, mood swings and low self-esteem
  • Problems with memory or concentration (brain fog)
  • Hot flushes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Heart palpatations
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Muscle aches and joint pains
  • Weight gain
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Vaginal dryness and pain, itching or discomfort during sex
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV1.
