The third season of surprise hit Western drama Yellowstone wrapped up this summer with a terrifying power play against the Duttons. As the wait for the fourth season to return to Paramount and finally reveal the culprit continues, fans have been busy guessing how the first new episode will unfold.

Showrunner Taylor Sheridan pulled out all the stops for this season of Yellowstone, and the finale ended with a devastating confrontation which could leave the Dutton family in ruins.

Fan theories are currently flying after Dutton patriarch John (played by Kevin Costner) was left bleeding from gunshot wounds, his cell phone the only thing stopping him getting shot through the heart.

Meanwhile, the fates of his children Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) remain unclear as they, too, were targeted by unknown assailants.

Many fans are convinced Beth’s time on the show is over after she received an explosive package sent to her office, although Kayce was last seen sheltering from approaching gunmen.

Unfortunately, there could be a long time to wait before the fourth season gets started, as production has only just begun in Alabama.

Nevertheless, this means perceptive fans have months ahead to start figuring out who ordered the attacks on Dutton Ranch before the drama continues.

Most eyes are on rival ranch owner Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway), who attempted to muscle in on John’s territory in the latest season.

Alternatively, other fans have been treating Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) with plenty of suspicion after he discovered the hidden truth about his troubled past.

Following the jaw-dropping finale, viewers have been debating heatedly about which characters won’t be making it to the next season alive.

More recently, fans have taken to Reddit to propose how the surviving Duttons will react when they discover who declared war on their coveted cattle ranch.

Redditor boogaloobrigadier posted: “I could see Rip and Kayce immediately wanting a revenge tour, but JD might talk them down.”

Although Kayce and father John Dutton have remained distant throughout the series, ranch hand and manager Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is one of John’s most faithful confidants.

Assuming Kayce escapes his assailants, the pair could start season four by following the trail of breadcrumbs and mercilessly taking down whoever they find on the other end.

However, this observant fan reasoned the ever pragmatic John Dutton could talk them out of it to avoid getting more blood on their hands.

On the other hand, though many fans admit the series isn’t likely to kill off its major characters, one commenter insisted revenge was the only way forward.

They replied: “I think the Duttons will plot revenge, but I think the first half of season four will be devoted to a whodunnit, rather than some revenge tour.”

While viewers are keen to see the family’s rivals get their comeuppance, the show is infamous for its slow builds throughout the first three seasons.

Yellowstone’s audience will have to tune in to a new episode each week, and the show’s traditionally deliberate pace may take some time to get going.

But, as the fan assured: “Once it’s revealed who the culprit is, I think the show will kick into gear into taking that person down, whoever they may be.”

Yellowstone is available to watch on Paramount.
