The fifth season of Yellowstone has blindsided fans with twists and turns aplenty, and there is still more to come with 10 episodes left of the current season to go. In the two-part season premiere, Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) are devastated by an unexpected tragedy, and two mainstays on the Paramount Network drama have revealed how the death of John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) grandson could tie in with the show’s heavy themes.

Jefferson White and Jennifer Landon have discussed their fascinating interpretation of the untimely loss of John Dutton Jr in Yellowstone’s season premiere.

At the start of season five, a heavily pregnant Monica desperately drives herself to the hospital to give birth before a cow suddenly appears on the road.

The resulting crash throws Monica several feet from the wreckage, and her son dies shortly after an agonising labour.

John’s first grandson Tate (Brecken Merrill) tells the Dutton patriarch he had a brother for just an hour before he passed away.

“It’s brutal,” Jefferson said. “Many episodes throughout Yellowstone are John Dutton facing his own mortality.

“Facing the mortality of his legacy. So much of what he does is about protecting his family. To protect generations to come.”

Over the course of Yellowstone’s original four seasons, John has been forced to come to terms with the limited years he has left and what he’ll be leaving behind.

With his valuable ranch still coming under fire, he has taken desperate measures to ensure his children Kayce, Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) remain protected.

John starts season five by being sworn in as the new governor of Montana, ensuring he has even more political power over both the state and his land.

However, his grandson’s death serves as a crushing reminder that no matter how desperately he tries to protect his family, tragedy can strike at any moment.

“He’s doing everything he can to try to control the future,” Jefferson explained.

“And this is just a little reminder that no matter what you do, no matter how hard you fight, you can’t control everything. Time comes for all of us.”

John’s newfound political career comes as no surprise for Yellowstone fans, as he launched his campaign last season to tighten the Duttons’ grip on his coveted Montana land.

Now he’s working around the clock to ensure his controversial new policies are legislated, the governor could be too distracted to notice the threats gathering closer to home.

“It also feels like a foreshadowing or harbinger…” Teeter star Jen chimed in on the Official Yellowstone Podcast.

“As John’s focus gets out and elsewhere, there’s a real threat to what he might lose back home.”

“There’s a real threat to losing almost everything, it feels like.”

Baby John’s death could turn out to be a dark piece of foreshadowing for the loss of a more major character somewhere down the line.

While no one’s exit has been confirmed just yet, John will have to try and keep a close eye on his three children before another terrible tragedy befalls the Dutton family.

Yellowstone season 5 continues Sundays on the Paramount Network and the following Monday on Paramount+.
